In November 2000 ABQ Alpacas sent the first ever shipment of alpacas, 60 to Dr Gavin Lindhorst of Cape Town, South Africa. This was followed in October 2001 by a second shipment of 30 females, fawns and browns with 4 males to Chris Griffith of Lidgetton in Natal, South Africa.
A further shipment to South Africa is planned for later in 2005.
The alpacas have adapted well in their South African environment, a further endorsement of the alpacas already proven versatility to adapt to the many differing environments found in around the world.

Alpaca Fibre Marketing
Breeders in South Africa have been quick to establish an outlet for the alpaca fibre. With a developing industry this has been a very important step to ensure a viable long term future for the industry.
South Africa will soon have its own Alpaca mark, a generic quality label for all the approved South African manufactured garments.
